What to Expect in Norway

Norway is a unique land for many reasons: for instance, if you plan a trip during the summer time, there is no end to the daylight. Due to the position of the country, there are times in the summer when you’ll literally see a horizon throughout the middle of the night until the sun starts inching upwards again. In western Norway there are fjords cut through sheer mountains and waterfalls so stunning that you’d think you’re in a fantasy story. Actually, the movie series, “The Lord of the Rings” was shot in Norway because of its breathtaking beauty and vastness. In the North Cape of Norway, you’ll be a mere thousand miles from the North Pole, (don’t forget to visit Santa Claus!) and this leads it to be a hot spot for expedition researchers that visit the North Pole on a regular basis.

What Makes a Fjord Special?

There are certain conditions that must occur for a fjord to be a fjord. Without any of the following conditions present, a similar geological feature cannot be considered a fjord:

  • A fjord is a long and narrow waterway
  • A fjord must inlet from the sea
  • There must be steep sides/ cliffs along both sides
  • The cliffs around a fjord must have been formed by glacial erosion

Fjords are unique and rare formations though they are most prevalent in Norway and Iceland. During the Ice Age there was significant glacial movement across the lands, ultimately resulting in the formation of many fjords. Photographers, nature lovers and people of all walks of life can appreciate the natural splendor and beauty of these amazing streams and rivers sitting between sheer rock walls of mountainous proportions.

Norway Cruise Providers

There are three main companies operating in Norway for fjord tours and cruises. Two of which are based in Norway. Hurtigruten and Fred Olsen Cruises operate out of Norway and they are well reputed in the region. Hurtigruten employs a Phillipino crew whereas Fred Olsen only employs Scandinavians, even for jobs such as cooks and janitorial services. Based in Hollywood, CA, Costa Cruises also offers attractive packages on fjord cruises. Between the three companies there are always great deals for vacations!
